GROWN FALL COLOR

When
fall comes some people start thinking about next season and putting
this year's garden to bed. If planned correctly, your garden can
still be going strong when others have gone to sleep! Anyone can
plant the standard Pansies and Mums, but there are perennials that
can lengthen the blooming season and several perennials that provide
brilliant fall color. Ornamental grasses, Russian Sage, Joe Pye
Weed, Asters, and Blanket Flower are a few examples of perennials
than can add character to your containers and gardens.

Prepare
planting sites for new perennials with care because these plants
often remain in the garden for many years. Amend the soil with organic
matter and check the soil's pH to make sure it is not too acid or
alkaline and correct if needed. When setting out new perennials,
carefully spread out the roots in the planting hole, watering immediately
after planting. Perennials need good drainage; very few can tolerate
soggy soil. Each perennial has a peak season of bloom, usually lasting
from one to three months. Foliage remains after blooms fade so plants
can renew energy stores for repeating the show next year. So give
your containers or flowerbeds a needed face-lift for fall - grow
your own fall colors!
