FIVE EASY PERENNIALS - IT'SAUL WHITE DIANTHUS
~Mark Dunaway

Last month we looked at Cabbage Flower Daylilies as first in our series of Five Easy Perennials. This month we're going to talk about It'Saul White Dianthus.

Most Dianthus' are not fond of heat, humidity, nor clay soils. Of course, these problems would preclude success in most of the South. But Dianthus 'It'Saul White' and a few other related Dianthus cultivars buck the trend. This gem shines in the Southern garden the year 'round and literally sparkles with lovely single wedding-white flowers in May.

The foliage of It'Saul White is a lovely steel-blue color and stays around to grace the garden when most of its other perennial buddies are either hibernating or ragged from the ravages of winter. The form and function of this Dianthus is that of a groundcover, with grass-like leaves and a fairly aggressive tendency to take over the garden. If you want fairly quick cover this is a good thing. If you want a perennial bed shared between polite plant-neighbors, then you may want to reconsider.

It'Saul White Dianthus can be grown in Atlanta with no irrigation, and, in fact, seems to thrive on natural rainfall alone. Often, in irrigated locations, it suffers from a degree of dieback and may appear scraggly. This can be easily ameliorated in the early spring with a light topdressing of rich soil, mushroom compost or composted peanut hulls. The Dianthus will thank you for the tonic by coming up through this soil topdressing with fresh new foliage and a renewed vigor.

THANKSGIVING HISTORY

One primary source of record for the events of Plymouth in autumn 1621 is the following paragraph by Edward Winslow. The language is a bit strange to us but the events are clearly described. We hope you enjoy this little bit of the history of Thanksgiving!

"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruits of our labor. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which we brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.

WHO'S CHERYL?

If you weren't aware, for the last 8 years OLM has had a sister division that implements our same management system for janitorial service: competitive bidding, Performance Payment™ based contracts, and monthly site inspections. However, there are some distinctions and differences between those of us on the landscape side and… Cheryl.

Cheryl makes sure window mullions, baseboards, and restrooms are clean while we make sure curbs are blown.

Us landscape consultants use our fingers to determine soil moisture. Cheryl wouldn't dream of touching soil unless she was wearing gloves.

Us landscape consultants check weather forecasts to determine what to wear and if we will be walking or driving a site. Cheryl figures out which suites to inspect in each building.

Us landscape consultants think dirt is a necessity. Cheryl sees dirt as the enemy.

Us landscape consultants see residue on a leaf and think insecticide. Cheryl sees residue on the floor and knows too much cleanser was used.

Folks, the concept is the same. You have to "inspect what you expect" and manage the process. Cheryl Stewart is a former Property Manager who knows how to handle the bid process, verify that work is being done according to specifications, and get the results you need to keep your tenants happy!

Need help? Have questions? Whether it concerns home or at work, contact OLM by phone, e-mail or fax and we will be glad to assist!
