Color
is in!
There
are many ways to increase the color in your garden, such as adding
objects like glazed pots, planters and garden art. Use bold, colorful
paint for the walls and furniture in the garden to provide other
colorful elements. However, the most effective way to give your
garden pizzazz is in your choice of plants.
When
designing your garden, try to choose just a few colors to use throughout.
Depending on available space, try mass planting 5 to 15 of the same
plant rather than planting two or three plants of 10 different varieties.
Large groups of one color and variety of plant will give more of
an impact than a mixed look.
Annuals
give the longest bloom time and provide a great way to experiment
with different plants. Try filling one planter with Yellow Marigolds
and another with Purple Wave Petunias for a contrasting theme, or
using Victoria Salvia and Pink Cascade Petunia for a more harmonious
look. Don't forget height and sun tolerance when shopping for your
plants. Some annuals require more maintenance such as deadheading,
fertilizing, and watering. Feel free to ask your OLM consultant
what varieties may work best in your landscape.
If
you prefer more greenery or perennials, there are many varieties
that produce long and/or recurring blooms. Ever Blooming Daylilies
provide season-long color. Happy Returns is a recurrent lemon-yellow
blooming perennial and is extremely hardy. Shrub Roses are an excellent
perennial alternative to Hybrid Tea and Floribunda Roses. And talk
about color! Choose from yellows, reds, pinks, corals and even oranges
-- a great way to brighten up your landscape.

Remember
lightening bugs? When daytime starts to dissolve into darkness they
light up as if they suspended in mid-air. Children run in the direction
of that flash of yellow, hoping to capture one of these amazing
insects before it disappears from sight.
Practically
all kids share a fascination with bugs and insects. These backyard
visitors come in so many amazing and unique colors and varieties,
shapes and styles, they're a great source of interest for inquisitive
and imaginative minds.
There's
the mysterious praying mantis and the beautiful butterfly. The just
plain cute ladybug and the spooky spider. Along with our playtime
buddy the lightening bug, these are just a sample of what you can
find in your own yard. With a little direction, your kids can enjoy
backyard bug adventures all summer long while you're working or
playing in the great outdoors.
Bugs
and insects are a part of every landscape and garden. Almost everyone
remembers using a Mason jar to catch and observe (and hopefully
release outdoors!) any number of these yard inhabitants. Now there
are lots of containers you can buy just for this purpose. With a
few simple items, our bug and insect friends can provide hours of
entertainment for kids and for the kids at heart!
