AH,
TRANQUILITY
We
live in an exciting, fast-paced, rapidly changing world. When the
hustle and bustle of the late nineteenth century started stressing
out old Henry Thoreau, he retreated to the beauty and simplicity
of nature. In a less extreme way, we do as well. Studies show that
Americans are spending more and more time in the garden. No wonder!
A garden or outdoor living area can be a peaceful retreat. It's
our private oasis amid a chaotic world.
Like
a real oasis, water should play an important role in creating
a soothing and relaxing environment. Container water gardens have
become very popular and just about anything that will hold water
is a possibility. A whiskey barrel or concrete container can add
a quiet, tranquil water flow with a simple pump, some rocks, and
a few aquatic plants. Or, try an actual fountain in your yard. Available
in all kinds of designs and sizes there's a fountain for any deck,
balcony, patio, or garden style.
Wind
chimes and garden bells can also add a soothing element to your
outdoor living area. Garden bells can be both a beautiful sculpture
and a wonderful musical instrument. But for the ultimate in relaxation,
climb into a hammock! Lie in it the Brazilian way -- diagonally
from one corner to the other and "let your soul dangle."

THE
TEN LAWS OF GARDENING
-
Nothing ever looks like it does on the seed packet.
- Your
lawn is always slightly bigger than your desire to mow it.
- Whichever
garden tool you want is always at the back of the shed.
- The
only way to ensure rain is to give the garden a good soaking.
- Weeds
grow at precisely the rate you pull them out.
- Autumn
follows summer, winter follows autumn, drought follows planting.
- Evergreens
go a funny shade of brown in the winter.
- The
only way to guarantee some color all year round is to buy
a garden gnome.
- However
bare the lawn, grass will appear in the cracks between the
patio paving stones.
- "Annuals"
mean disappointment once a year.
